Browsing the internet is becoming more and more of a security threat to a user’s computer than ever before. It is not uncommon for internet users to have experienced more than one virus attack in the past, sometimes with catastrophic impact to the data that they have on their systems. There are some things that can be done, however, to help prevent this from happening again in the future, although it is never 100% guaranteed.

The first and most important thing that a computer user can do is install an antivirus software package. Be sure that you research the antivirus software packages available to you before you decide on one. Most of these packages simply use a pattern matching algorithm to detect viruses. Although effective against simple viruses, this will do nothing to protect you from a virus that has been written by a professional. In order for an antivirus program to be effective, it also has to have the ability to keep track of the programs and files that are active on a system so that it can warn the user of any suspicious changes in these files. This method will at least warn a computer user of suspicious activity that is occurring on their computer system. This method will also be able to stop and delete some unknown viruses before they have a chance to do any damage to your computer. Also be sure that the antivirus software you are using is up to date so that known viruses are easily detected and destroyed.

Simply having antivirus software installed on your computer is not enough to protect you from online threats. A computer user has to have common sense when browsing the internet or looking through e-mails if they are going to have a chance of preventing viruses from infecting their computer.

The most common method of spreading viruses today is through the use of e-mail attachments. For this reason, be sure that you do not open any attachments that have been sent to you from someone that you do not know. Also be sure to use common sense when opening attachments from senders that you do know. Sometimes their computer can become infected with a virus that will send e-mail attachments to everyone in their contact list. For this reason, a good rule of thumb is to not open any attachments that are unsolicited.

Also be careful when browsing the internet. Often times a website will attempt to download files to your computer without your knowledge. Understanding and properly configuring your web browser is a great way to prevent this from happening without your knowledge.

Once you have purchased and installed a good antivirus program, be sure that you fully read and understand any documentation that is provided with it. The only way that you will be able to get the most protection possible out of your antivirus software is to follow these instructions and configure the software for the way that you use your computer. Also be sure to schedule regular scans of your computer and make sure that any real-time protection features in the antivirus software are turned on. After all, antivirus software is only useful if it is actually checking the files before you open them.
