An application error, also known as a software bug, is an error or mistake that has been made in a computer program that causes it to act differently than what is expected. Most of these errors are created because of an error made by the developer in either the program’s source code or its design. A few can also be created by compilers that may produce incorrect code, most likely because they have been configured incorectly by the user.

Application errors can affect a computer program in many different ways and can cause many different levels of inconvenience to the end user of the software. Some errors have very little affect on the software and can go unnoticed for long periods of time, while other application errors will prevent the software from loading or functioning properly and can result in application error codes being displayed to the end user. Other errors that have been made in the software can cause security loop-holes that can allow hackers to obtain unauthorized access to your computer system.

Some very extreme examples of application errors or bugs include the code that was controlling a radiation therapy machine that was directly responsible for the deaths of patients because there was a problem in the software it was using. In 1996 a one billion dollar prototype rocket was destroyed less than a minute after its launch because of an error in the guidance computer’s program.

Application errors are generally a result of the nature of programming. Some will occur because of a simple oversight in the syntax of a command or when data is transcribed carelessly. Other bugs occur from unintended interactions between different sections of the computer program that were never designed to work together. This usually only occurs in more complex computer programs that several different programmers have been working on, causing confusion when trying to keep track of every different way that the code can interact with other parts of the program.

Because of how serious some errors can be, the computer industry has attempted ot reduce the application errors and bugs that are generated by setting guidelines in several areas. This includes programming style, programming techniques, development methodologies and programming language support.

If you have a computer program that is giving you application error messages, chances are you are not the only one. You can quickly search for the error in an internet search engine to help determine the cause and possible solutions to correcting the problem. Be sure to use caution when trying to repair the software however. Many sites will claim to have a program that can easily repair all your problems for a low cost, but in fact are just offering patches and updates that are available for free from other sources.

If you cannot find the answer to help you out, it is often a good idea to contact the developer responsible for your software so that they can help you get things working properly. In some cases, they may not even know that the problem exists and you can help them become aware of it before shipping out more software packages with the same problem.
