The print spooler is the mechanism which manages any data that you send to your printer for output. It’s the link in the chain that enables your software to interact with your hardware device. If anything happens to that link in the chain, and you suffer from print spooler problems, it’s likely that you’re going to have problems using your printer.
There are several print spooler errors that it is worth taking note of. One of the easiest to fix is:
Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.
This essentially means that the spooler service has been sent to inactive, either by yourself or another rogue application setting. Thankfully, turning the print spooler back on is fairly straightforward.
Go to Start on your Windows desktop, and then choose Run. When the dialog box pops up, you should type services.msc and press enter. This will take you to the service management utility on Windows.
Click on the print spooler service and if it isn’t already set as such, change the setting to Automatic. This will ensure that every time you load up Windows, or log on to your user account, the print spooler service is enabled and data can be sent to the printer for output. Save your settings, apply them and then reboot Windows for the settings to take effect. In some instances, this won’t be necessary and the service will already be activated.
Alternatively, you may be having trouble even getting to the point of having a printer added on your system. If you’re looking to install a new printer, but have already got one configured, the chances of them clashing are actually very high. Take note of the error below:
Spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This error is usually triggered by a print driver collision. If you have a Lexmark printer installed, the chances of drivers conflicting with each other are even greater. There has been much talk of the Lexmark co-compatibility issue. You can get around it by disabling the LexBce Server service from your control panel and restarting the machine.
Now when you re-install the new printer, the drivers should be copied properly without interference from the Lexbce server. This is quite a pain at the time, but once you have both printers installed, you shouldn’t be forced to deal with anymore print spooler errors.
If stopping the Lexbce service doesn’t prevent the print spooler error messages, you will need to consider the prospect of choosing one printer over the other or physically editing the registry settings that apply to each printer. This can be a tedious and not to mention dangerous task when performed manually, so it’s a good idea to call on the help of a specialised registry editing software!
Once the registry details for the printers have been adjusted, and the drivers have been configured separately, they should finally be able to operate in tandem. You can contact your printer manufacturer for specific advice when it comes to ensuring you have the most suitable driver for your system.
