Are you suffering from intolerable system lag? Does it take an eternity to load your favourite applications? Maybe you’ve got time to make a cup of coffee while your email loads. Either way, slow PC performance is one of the greatest banes of users throughout the world. And unfortunately, fixing slow PC performance is no black and white issue.
Every PC is different and by the time the user has installed his or her personal selection of programs and apps, that is even more the case. To improve slow PC performance, we first have to locate the bottlenecks where time is being lost by the processor.
A lot of the time, slow PC performance is caused by having too many programs open at the same time. This is probably the easiest problem to fix. Simply shut down a few programs and only run what is necessary at the time. Your PC is bound by the amount of virtual memory it has stored, and more importantly the processor that sits behind the PC. If you really want to handle more programs, you should consider upgrading with more RAM or a better processor. It’ll make a significant difference.
Have you noticed slow PC performance after installing a series of new programs? Another very common symptom of slow PC performance is a boot time that drags on considerably longer than it used to. A good manual fix for this is to go in to the Windows Task Manager and uncheck boxes in the boot up process. This will stop Windows trying to load unnecessary programs when it boots. If you never use a program, there’s really no need to have Windows load it when it initializes.
Performing a little house maintenance and ensuring that you’re only loading the necessary programs is a brilliant way of clearing up some slow PC performance issues. Unfortunately, it might not always work though.
If you’re suffering from viruses and malware, these will very rarely respond to your request that they not be loaded on start-up. They are often triggered by internal requests on the boot shell and will load regardless of your personal configurations. This is why it’s so important to browse the Internet with an anti-virus suite installed. Failure to do so leaves you as a sitting duck, just begging to be attacked by malicious third party programmers. Even if you’re doing something as simple as checking your email, it’s so important to be aware of the threat and do so with an anti-virus program watching your back.
Stopping viruses and malware from intruding on your system will go a long way to curing slow PC performance. And even if it doesn’t, it should be seen as good practice!
If none of the above works, consider a registry scan to determine whether internal faults with the Windows registry are causing slow PC performance. It’s not rare at all that a bad library of files can have a knock on effect as Windows tries to function normally while having to seep through the errors. Slow PC performance doesn’t have to be a death sentence for your system – but it should be treated before it becomes one.
