If you’ve been using your Windows based computer for quite a while, you’ve probably noticed that speed has dropped quite significantly in the time that’s passed since you installed it for the first time. This is completely natural, and to an extent, possible to reverse. Windows is inclined to degrade in performance over time if it’s left to accumulate bad files and bad memory. But before you rush out to spend a wage’s earnings on a brand new lightning PC, consider some of the way to speed up a PC without starting from scratch with a new system.

To best know how to speed up a PC, we must know what causes the speed problems in the first place. One of the top reasons is disk errors. When you use Windows for a sustained period, it will add lots of files to the system and the Windows registry (the native structure that handles all of your application variables and device drivers) holds the possibility of becoming corrupted. This will result in a dramatically reduced performance and in many cases, the addition of runtime errors and the infamous blue screen of death.

Disk errors consume Windows’ valuable processing time while they’re resolved, and you’ll notice that programs begin to lag as Windows tries to make the most out of the working memory that it has. To speed up a PC, you should run the disk cleanup option regularly. And remember to defrag! It can make a significant difference to speed times, although there are several third party tools that work better than Windows’ native defragging utilities.

One of the most effective boosts you can give in the speed department is to upgrade your computer with additional memory and give it more processing power to play with. While this is certainly an expensive method in comparison to some of the others that we can talk about, there’s the old adage that you get what you pay for. With more memory and better processing, you will almost certainly notice an improved performance in your PC. It’s also the cheaper alternative to investing in a whole new PC, which is unnecessary if speed is your one and only concern.

Spyware and viruses have to be given massive consideration when it comes to why your PC is running so slowly. Speed up a PC by ensuring that malicious third party software isn’t draining your system resources for its own parasite needs. Browsing the Internet without anti-virus software or detection in place should be seen as a crime. It’ll compromise your computer to hacking attempts and leave you with spyware that can potentially grind your computer to a halt.

To speed up PC times, run regular spyware scanning tools to make sure that you catch errors and malicious applications before they begin to take too big a toll on the computer. This way you’ll get the most out of Windows, and run at something close to the optimal speed according to the hardware settings that you have in place.
