Microsoft has such a huge size of the desktop computing market that it's under constant pressure to offer an interactive and enjoyable operating system, while still making its product accessible to the masses and perhaps most importantly of all - secure from outside attacks in the digital age.
With every new release of Windows, you can expect a few thousand tiny mini-releases of patches and bug catchers to deal with the problems as and when they arise in your everyday use. Ever had an error and a little dialogue box offering you the opportunity to report an error to Microsoft? Of course you have! And it's this reporting ability that keeps Microsoft techies busy from 9 to 5 producing patches that enable you - and everybody else - to get the most out of their products.
So what Microsoft updates can you expect and how can we get them?
Well, if you're not particularly keen on checking the Microsoft website or responding to every last update alert, you can wait for the designated Service Packs that Microsoft releases between operating systems. These are basically booster packs. They open up new abilities with Windows while fixing all known security bugs that have been reported up to that point.
You can download each Windows Service Pack free of charge from the Microsoft website, but you will need to have a valid Windows key from a valid legal purchase. If you were a little crafty in your acquisition of Windows, the service pack will not be an option for you.
You can actually go to the Microsoft Update website to make updating any software or hardware features an automated deal. The website will scan your computer online and determine whether there are available upgrades for which you can select whether you want to download them individually, or allow the website to bundle and install them in one great heap.
And yes, expect to find that there ARE upgrades available - no matter how well you keep your system maintained! Not every update should be seen as necessary, and some are entirely optional. The Microsoft updates that should matter most are generally the ones that relate to recently discovered security loopholes. It never hurts to be as best protected as you possibly can be, particularly with hackers becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attacks.
Microsoft Updates also provides, as you'd expect, the latest fixes for Internet Explorer which remains arguably the most popular of its ongoing software developments. Internet Explorer is regularly patched and fixes are constantly released to make life easier for web developers while improving our own online experience.
You can use the simple link marked "Latest Security Updates" to find out in a matter of seconds whether you're fully protected. It's also possible to sing up to the newsletter which will deliver update alerts straight to your inbox for safe reading.
Updating your PC isn't a fun task and it can often get neglected in the To DO list of things on your mind. Do yourself a favour and put it to the top of the priority list for once. You might find that your copy of Windows improves dramatically as a result.
