Realtek is a highly popular manufacturer of peripheral, multimedia and networking hardware. Based in Taiwan, the company has been around since the late 80s and provides many quality network and gateway controllers - taking up a sizeable share in this particular market.

If you are operating a Realtek product, having the correct drivers installed is absolutely vital. The nature of Realtek's products mean that an incorrect driver - or a corrupted version - will usually result in the product hardware failing completely.

The Realtek ALC101 driver is an 18 bit, full duplex AC’97 2.2 compatible stereo audio CODEC made for PC multimedia systems. There are host /soft audio and AMR/CNR based designs. The CODEC supports many CODEC extensions. There are independent variable sampling rates and built–in 3D effects. There is the single chip audio CODEC with high S/N radio. The device is compliant with AC’97 2.3 specification. There are three line-level stereo inputs accompanied by 5-bit volume controls. There is one analog line-level mono input that supplies the phone-in. There is 1 MIC input, digital power supply which clocks by external 14.318 MHz or 24.576 MHz source to save crystal.

Many Realtek customers - notably video game enthusiasts - complained in the past that there were considerable problems with the audio products. The drivers for the audio in the device manager would often become disabled randomly, and as a result, this lead to a lot of confusion as applications ceased to perform. All the other Realtek drivers had the same effects. Realtek thus developed an unsavioury reputation for crashing a lot of systems that were trying to operate high demand videogames. The device features 16.bit two channel DACs and a stereo 16-bit ADC. The ALKC 850 includes proprietary converter technology and it meets requirements for PC 99/2001 systems.

The Realtek ALC 250 happens to be a 18 bit ADC full duplex AC and 20-bit DAC ’97 Rev that is compatible with 2.3 stereo audio CODEC manufactured especially for computer multimedia systems. It includes soft/host audio and designs based on AMR/CNR. There is a built–in 7-band digital hardware equalizer. The device caters to the requirements for the audio on PC 99/2001 systems. The device meets the requirements of Microsoft audio WHQL/WLP 2.0. It complies with AC 97Rev 2 specifications. There is LINE/HP-OUT, MIC-IN and LINE –IN sensing. It also comes with full interrupt capaility.

There are three analog line level stereo inputs with 5-bit volume control / which are LINE–IN, CD and AUX and you'll also find two MIC ports which are selectable through the included software. There is external amplifier power down capability and the software provides 3D stereo entertainment while the configuration provides voice cancellation and key shifting in the Karaoke mode. There is also an AVRack Media player. Drivers with this particular product are known to have some difficulty on Windows Vista so you may wish to contact support before downloading a whole host of different drivers.

The Realtek ALC 250 also contains a configuration panel providing better experience for the user. Whether it be multimedia programs, 3D PC games, information appliances, voice recognition and audio conferencing - an appropriate driver is required or performance will falter dramatically. There are many who have the latest drivers but the machine nevertheless crashes. While the ALC 850 meets audience requirements for audio on PC 99/2001 systems, it has been known to have difficulties on newer Windows operating systems.

This standard driver is a software device that meets Microsoft WHQL/WLP 2.0 requirements and it comes with an eight–channel DA converter. There is a high quality differential CD input and a stereo front-Mic input that is dedicated for applications on the front panel. The software device enables three analog line level stereo inputs with five-bit volume controls that are line-in, CD and Aux. The driver has had complaints and there are some who want to change over to other modes, but it is slowly beginning to win over the large Realtek community and driver errors are becoming less critical and abundant.

Refer to the Realtek website for exact model specifications and driver bundles. You should act to keep your drivers up to date at all times or risk a dramatic drop in the quality of your hardware output.
