The Microsoft Windows registry, as you may be aware, is one of the most susceptible components of Windows when it comes to corruptions and data damage. A healthy working registry is absolutely essential for any computer to function properly, and any less than this will result in a dramatic downturn in your overall registry performance.
So to explain further, the Windows registry is actually a directory of files which takes care of settings across each of the different Windows platforms. You'll find a registry on 32-bit versions, 64-bit versions and also on the various Windows Mobile based platforms.
Before the registry was introduced, Windows would rely entirely on groupings of INI files. This worked to an extent but it didn't allow for quick and scalable editing. It also meant that you'd be left with your computing settings sprawled across various folders with a hard job on your hands should you ever wish to gather them together for maintenance.
The registry is divided in to what are known as registry hives. You will find differing numbers of hives according to the version of Windows that is active on your system. Either way, these hives are marked with an HKEY prefix, making them quite easy to locate from within the registry. The hives group various settings in to collections that make sense. For example, we can have a hive for hardware settings, and a hive for our current user profile.

If you're running an older version of Microsoft Windows, you will also notice a hive called HKEY_DYN_DATA. This particular hive collected together all settings related to hardware devices, particularly plug and play hardware.

An incredible number of PC users continue to ignore the delicacy of their Windows registry, and until something is done, many will continue fail to stamp out some of the most basic errors that can be triggered on Windows.
